The Future Industry
Online learning, immersive learning, multimedia tools (e.g. virtual reality, augmented reality, motion graphics, 3D animation, and other digital tools) are considered the future of training and education. This future must be grounded and rooted in the future society into which it will be delivered. Increased technological innovation and disruption across industries is threatening jobs with obsoletion…and giving birth to new ones.
The 4IR technologies of additive manufacturing (3D printing), artificial intelligence, automation, big data, Internet of Things, machine learning, nanomaterials, robotics, and increased usage of drones are transforming business processes, their way-of-work, and way-of-learning; rendering the work landscape one of constant change.

Mining’s 4IR, and Training and Education Future
Mining as an industry is embracing the changes of 4IR in its way of work and way of learning.
Mines are increasingly utilising robotics for dozing, excavation, haulage, mapping and surveying, drilling, and explosive handling. This has created new jobs, e.g. mining field roboticists. The mining industry’s pursuit of improved productivity, safety, and increased cost savings are driving strategic objectives. As the world’s technological innovations increase; the demand for minerals and metals will correspondingly increase. The future of electric vehicles, renewable energy, and robotics will require chrome, copper, and lithium amongst others.
Drones are being used to detect geothermal activity when exploring new mining sites, for underground monitoring, and to provide targeted drilling and sample areas that show strong resource promise. Continuous mining is possible through the ability to blast rock through the effective use of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
All this speaks to the change in mining jobs, and the need to upskill and equip miners. Digital learning tools through online platforms and face-to-face training are an effective manner of training and education. They facilitate improved comprehension and learning for each individual to become more effective and productive in their jobs. Among the primary drivers for using digital training methods is to improve safety and rescues on mines.
WinWin International’s mining clients attest to these benefits which include immersive induction training; realistic and effective safety, health, environment, and governance education; explorative rock breaking simulations; maintenance simulations; and community- and social engagement, and upliftment. WinWin’s immersive learning technology and platforms have successfully been employed to create modernised and safe mine environments through media-rich content and real mining scenario training. Its immersive content and innovative learning technology continuously drive skill acquisition, brings adventure, and promote modernisation within the South African mining landscape for clients.Digitalisation and employment of these innovative technologies in training and education help learners gain greater confidence in their ability to perform their jobs excellently. As WinWin has demonstrated over and again, they are a must when we design and develop training programmes to upskill individuals. Failure to do so will increase the skills and knowledge gap given the current rate of change.
