As we (fingers crossed…) exit the COVID era, the IOT Council held it’s first in-person members event in June 2022.
There were two speakers: Sean Laval from Sigfox South Africa, to talk a little about Sigfox and how it fits in the Low Power radio communications space, and a bit of a teaser about the relaunch of Sigfox in South Africa, expected to be made official within the next few months.
The keynote speaker was Andre Burger, CEO of the Welgevonden Nature Reserve, talking about the use of IOT technology to help in rhino conservation. The reserve set up a LoRaWAN network in a test area to put trackers on “sentinel animals”, antelope and other browsing animals that would be spooked by humans moving around the bush. Sudden changes in their movements would be a red flag to park rangers that poachers may be operating … allowing them to take action before a rhino is killed.
The strategy here made fascinating material, especially when comparing the technology (pre-COVID) the park had implemented, compared to what is available now – particularly in terms of the size, range and operating life of the devices.
The venue for the event was kindly provided by Winjit (your best choice in IOT platforms, machine learning and related technology systems).
The videography and staging costs were provided by Macrocomm (your favourite provider of technology services and integrated solutions using IOT).
